Making a book at times can be overwhelming, and a very different experience & skill set than making original works of art. This book workshop is designed to fill that gap, allowing the inspiration of other photo books to guide and inform the process from start to finish. Working with a seasoned book designer and artist, each workshop participant will gain a clear understanding of the process. This is not a software driven class (lots of hands-on stuff); this is a workshop about making a physical book dummy that provides the tactical feel for the book you are wishing to publish.
The goal of this workshop is to create a book-dummy, the real first step to publishing an art book or monograph. We will discuss each artist’s vision, mission and objectives for publication, and then to gain an understanding of how these conceptual aspects translate into a book object. Fundamental to the book development process is learning aspects of editing a large body of work, the editing for the book contents, sequencing of the body of work and in the context of a book design to shape and narrate a story.
The purpose of this workshop is to provide artists with the building blocks to move from a complex mass of images into a refined edit and subsequently sequence to create a pre-visualization of their book concept. Those who have benefited from this workshop have ranged from having an unorganized mess to a book layout that is about to be finalized with a publisher.

Who Should Attend:
This workshop is an opportunity for artists in all media (not just photography) currently working on, or planning to start a project that will result in a book publication. Whether you plan to pitch book submissions to a publisher or self-publish your artist book, this workshop is meant to help you create a book that meets your artistic vision. A small body of photographs to work with: 15 – 20 small digital images from their project is required to help the participants to work towards their publishing goal.
