The question I get asked most as a gallerist is, “How do I choose the artists I represent?” The better question to ask is, “How can I choose myself to be a successful artist without waiting for a gallery to represent me?” Whether you want to work with a gallery sometimes, all the time, or not at all, you can come up with a strategic plan to move your career forward.

In this workshop, you will learn and sharpen your skills to effectively get your work seen and discovered by your audience. I will introduce you to less traditional and unorthodox approaches to present and sell your work.

We will design a social media plan for effective communication, variety, and stickiness. I will advise on how to apply to competitions and what competitions to apply for, and other opportunities that are worth your time, effort, and resources.
Practical strategies on approaching galleries, professionalizing your portfolio and having a clear artist statement will be addressed, as well as current trends in photography, discovering where your work might fit in.

About Michael Foley

Michael Foley was born in Delaware and grew up in Croton-on-Hudson, New York.  He opened his gallery in the fall of 2004 after fourteen years of working with notable photography galleries, including Fraenkel, Howard Greenberg, and Yancey Richardson.

Art and photography have been a passion since his high school days as a staff yearbook photographer.  His personal art-making practice is equally inspired by collage, cut paper, and painting.  In 2006, he brought artists within these disciplines to the list of exhibiting gallery artists.

Foley went on to co-found The Exhibition Lab in the fall of 2009.  He is the founder of The Photo Community, which regularly offers workshops and critiques for photographers.  He gives guidance to fine art photographers in his weekly newsletter, The Photographer's Report on Substack.

Foley continues his interest in educating by serving on the School of Visual Arts faculty and the International Center of Photography, where he teaches and lectures on issues in contemporary photography.

Our instructors are working professional photographers who have a passion for sharing and inspiring. We recognize the commitment of time, energy and money it takes for you to attend a workshop and work very hard to be the best at intimately knowing our locations, providing a wealth of high quality information via excellent presentations and one on one help in the field, presenting extremely supportive and highly detailed image reviews, and doing all of this in an energy rich, supportive environment where inspiration and having fun are the hallmark of our workshops.

SE Center Workshops fully realizes that in addition to the education business we are in the inspiration business, and ultimately, we are a service business. We are here to serve you and your complete satisfaction with your workshop experience is our pledge. After all, the majority of our workshop participants are repeat customers and we know as well as anyone that we only get one chance to make a memorable first impression.
