This is a 5 day Zoom Workshop,

This workshop is designed for photographers who are interested in thinking a little bit less (stay with me here!). Inspired by a story in Art & Fear by David Bayes and Ted Orland, in which a photography teacher divides his class into two groups–––’ quantity’ and ‘quality’–––asking that students deliver either 100 new images or one perfect image. This workshop applies the theory that the act of making produces the best results, whereas a search for perfection can be debilitating.

Structured to shake things up and encourage the creation of new work, our goal will be to make a photography book in five weeks. Students will be encouraged to approach their book in a similar way to how an oil painter (think Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel) would make studies in red chalk to prepare for a fresco. The title of the workshop could also be Make a Photography Book ‘Study’ in Five Weeks. This is the perfect opportunity to use the image-making process to untangle yet-to-be-formed thoughts and ideas, bring an existing project to life, or start something new.

Our workshop will begin with the introduction of students' current practices, which will act as a benchmark for what we discover about our work and working habits in the subsequent four weeks. Students will be asked to focus on one project; this can be an existing body of work or the development of something completely new. We will present our ideas for group critique, including research, project statements and/or elevator pitches. Over the course of the workshop, students will explore their developing photography books through varied writing exercises, shooting assignments, and the use of organisational templates. Intended to be a crash course in creativity, the workshop structure is an environment that will push students to make, break unproductive habits in their practices and find inspiration.

Each week will centre around a particular theme relevant to developing a photography book, with the intention of determining both what our vision is for our work and where our work fits into current publishing trends. Sessions will be structured around lectures, research assignments and group critiques geared toward students' individual needs. We will specifically look at the relationship between our images and the book form, taking into consideration sequencing, text, colour and design. Ultimately throwing together something that allows us to experience the big picture of our projects in physical form.

This workshop is ideal for photographers of any ability, or discipline, who are interested in pushing the boundaries of their practice and experimenting with new ways to build their portfolios. Students are guaranteed to have a busy and productive five weeks. Making our photography books should be both confidence-building and satisfying, but importantly at the heart of this workshop is the concept of play. Students should expect to leave these five weeks refreshed and ready to turn a chalk study into their version of the Sistine Chapel.
