This is a 6 Session Zoom Workshop
"Re-imagining the Print" invites artists to treat the photographic surface as an active site for physical intervention, gesture, and remixing. The core philosophy centers on extending the print by transforming static photographic images into multi-layered, hybrid discoveries through a blend of physical painting, mark-making, and mixed materials. Throughout this course, we will explore both the rich history and contemporary possibilities of overpainting, hand-coloring, and structurally disrupting photographs. Through live demonstrations, material testing, and collaborative group critiques, participants will move beyond the traditional boundaries of the standard photographic frame. By integrating materials such as paint, dry media, and collage, and subsequently re-photographing the results, we will unlock infinite possibilities to expand a print's narrative toward a deeply personal, hybrid artistic vocabulary.
Technical Preparation
In preparation for our first session, all participants are required to familiarize themselves with the basics of Zoom and screen-sharing functionalities. Establishing technical familiarity with this online classroom environment prior to launch ensures a seamless and productive experience for the entire cohort.
Note on Materials: Registered participants will receive a comprehensive, detailed list of required materials and recommended brands prior to the start of the course.
Cathy Cone
Cathy Cone is a photographer, painter and printmaker. Her surrealist approach to photography began in the late 1970’s with the introduction of the "Diana" camera. This led to investigation of experimental techniques towards a multidisciplinary approach to her poetic image making. Cathy received her training at Ohio University, Vermont Studio Center. She received her MFA at the Maine Media College where she served as a mentor and guest faculty. Some of her exhibitions include Sewanee: University of the South, Weisman Art Museum, University of Alabama, DeCordova Museum, Griffin Museum of Photography, Brattleboro Museum and Art Center and the Vermont Center for Photography. Her works are in the collection of IBM, Hallmark Fine Art Collections, American Express, Beekman a Thompson Hotel, New York and many private collections. Cathy with her husband, master printer Jon Cone, founded Cone Editions Press in 1980 in Port Chester, NY as a collaborative printmaking workshop. Cone Editions Press is now located in East Topsham, Vermont where Cathy is director of the Workshops and Studio.
